So the same day I got Clawdeen at TJ Maxx, I also spotted the Welcome To Monster High Dance The Fright Away Lagoona. They were both six bucks, down from an MSRP of $15, so I grabbed them-- two dolls for the price of twenty percent off one doll? Give to mama.

And I actually do like this outfit! The printing seems a touch cheap, but eh-- the thing that I really like is how much it reminds me of The Metorologist Dress.

Back of the box! A blurb, a price sticker, a shot of the new school, and a lot of sparkles and balloons. Nothing spectacular.

Open box! Sometimes I have the feeling Reboot Lagoona is more shimmery than Classic Lagoona.

Loose with mask. DTFA Lagoona comes with sheath dress, armband, mask, and shoes. The stand is mine. Her leg fins are translucent and detachable, but her arm finds are sadly neither.

Lagoona's mask and armband are, weirdly, this shimmery red-coral color. While a perfectly legitimate color for coral, it's not one that's in Lagoona's usual palette, so it sort of stands out. I'm probably gonna paint the heck out of these.

Unmasked! One thing I tend to like about Lagoona's outfits in general is that when she themes to sea creatures, she sticks mostly to the same sea creatures-- here, it's sea stars (they're not fish so we're not supposed to call them starfish anymore, the things you learn because your nephew loves Octonauts). So for the school's first big dance, she painted a few under her eye.

Dress details! It's really cute on, and the colors are perfect Lagoona. I feel like it needs something around the neck and shoulders-- jacket, statement necklace, I dunno-- but it's a good basic piece, and has the sporty look the reboot is really trying to emphasize with Lagoona.

And how elegant are these shoes, dang. They do need a hot water soak to settle back into the right shape and not bag around her ankles, but that's being boxed in a cute pose for you.

I would love to see this armband in more colors. Sadly, I also know it's not likely to happen unless Mattel goes back to arm and wrist joints that can be removed without breaking the doll.

Mask details-- the handle is all bubbly!

And the inside of the mask has detail, too, which surprised me-- Clawdeen's doesn't have much, not really.

Front of the mask again, encrusted with seafoam bubbles and sea stars. Still not in love with the color, but the mask itself is darling.

Lagoona's hair is up in a half ponytail with a fancy twist to her bangs. While Clawdeen's hair feels a little too simple for First Formal Dance At The New School, Lagoona's feels pretty good-- it's not as elaborate as, say, her massive Dawn of the Dance seahorse fauxhawk, but it's clean and elegant and young.

Back of the dress! No pink blocks here, but a little bit of a bustle, and honestly?

They could've attached that a lot nicer. At least stitched it so the raw edge is underneath. That's definitely an 'I can fix this but I shouldn't have to' detail.

Okay, in conclusion:

While there are things I dislike (aw, opaque arm fins, no), the reboot has been extremely kind to Lagoona. She's one of the few characters whose style seems to have gotten clearer, that lemon-blonde hair really works for her, and when her screening is good, she's got an expression of sweet wonder. Lagoona has won the reboot. With this doll in particular, I don't really like the coral red of her accessories-- but I do like the accessories. Every individual piece is a Very Good Piece, even with the bustle tacked onto the back of the dress like that. I do kind of wish the envelope were pushed a little harder, but it doesn't look as backward on Lagoona as it does on Clawdeen.

Definitely worth six bucks; if you spot her in your local second-run store, grab her-- even just for shoes and as a potential body donor. Her joints are all good.
