Painted Accessories Picspam: Ghouls Getaway Jane Boolittle

The Ghouls Getaway dolls are just about tied with Gloom & Bloom for being covered in ridiculous amounts of beautifully-sculpted accessories that cried out for paint. This is only Jane's third doll, and although I do plan to list the nudie this week on eBay, I held onto her long enough to do a full photoshoot.

So this is Jane Before-- great colors, but detail largely obscured by Bright Teal and Neon Lime.

And this is Jane After. ... Much as I liked the Neon Lime, I really didn't like it... uh, basically anywhere it got used, and now some of these accessories can mingle with her Signature and Gloom & Bloom stuff.

Let's look at details!

A hair ornament that was lime is now teal feathers, a natural-looking Skullette (why do I always paint the skullettes' eyes, those are BEYOND challenging) and a ring of bones. Sure, it blends into her teal hair more than the original did, but neither of the Janes I'm keeping have teal hair, so that works out okay.

Some of the lime peeks through here, but the idea was to make all the feathers teal, all the bones... uh, bone, and all the bamboo natural-- and all the Tiki (Teaki, right, I can just headcanon that?) more or less resemble the guys from Skull Shores.

Unlike Jinafire, all of Jane's Teaki guys are happy Teaki guys. It was really hard to tell how spiffy the original sculpt on the collar was, because all the detail got lost in the blinding color. It's a good color-- just-- smaller doses are better, I think.

A closeup on the earrings. Those weren't actually that bad, but I really like painting bones (coat in antique white, heavy dry-brushing in cream, light dry-brushing in white-white), and the challenge of differentiating them from the bamboo was fun. The beads stay teal to keep the paint lasting longer, as that's the part I tend to pull on.

Belt! I always seem to get carried away on Jane's belts. This was solid teal before, and although the feathers are the original color, they've been washed and dry-brushed to help them stand out, I painted another ding dang skullette, and:

I painted all the bones. Coat in antique white, dry brush in cream, hit with my mattest artist's matte sealer. This is the kind of effort I should be saving for my Absolute Favoritest Characters Ever, but the thing is, once I put in this much effort, I start to like the character a lot more.

Also I like bones. This bracelet was a lot easier to paint than the belt or the earrings, because it was just 'coat it and stick it on a paintbrush to dry.'

So was this one! Except the black details. Which were fiddly, but they didn't have Skullette Eyelashes, so they weren't miserably fiddly. Also, the way Jane was originally packaged, I never would've realized the skull bracelet is actually an armband. ... Although if Jane ever reboots, it might just be a bangle. Reboot girls have thicker arms. (Side note to the whole 'yay custom painting!' thing, boy am I having trouble deciding who on my doll shelf gets a reboot body and who doesn't. I'm almost relieved that at least Indonesian dolls are developing swollen joints-- it makes it a lot easier to go "Oh, well, I guess Toralei keeps her old body with the noodle arms and the bracelets that fit!")

Where was I? Bracelets. Okay, so now we're down to:

Shoes! Okay, first of all, these are great shoes, I love them. I hate it when Mattel puts detail right on the front seams, like those skullettes, but I love the shape of the shoes-- and I feel like for once I didn't cover up all of the original color! I changed a lot of it, sure, but overall they're still teal shoes.

Sides! The detail on the platforms is mostly a black wash-and-wipe, but I did have to go in with my liner a little to tidy things up.

The Teaki heels got hit with a dark chocolate brown and then dry-brushed in a lighter brown-- there's a woodgrain I was trying to bring out, but at least you can see he's got a nose and teeth, as well as all the white detailing. Which is wobbly, one part because I'm not the world's best painter and one part because they're on the mold seam so they just... wobble a bit.

A closeup of that black cross-hatching, because I'm proud of it and want to show it off. I could probably just have done a wash in the same darker teal I used for the feathers, but I really wanted some black in the shoes, to help anchor them.

Fiddly fiddly fiddly bones and I painted every single one. These are smaller than the ones on her belt or her bracelets, but I really like Jane with naturalistic bone accessories.

And we close out with the full suite! Jane herself will be hitting eBay on Sunday, July 30th, with a starting bid of $7 shipped in the US, and I can never ever sell these accessories because there's no way I can ask a fair price for the time I put into them. This set represents... probably twelve hours of work, if not more, and I didn't attempt to freehand anything.

Also, I have recently obtained Ghouls Getaway Spectra's outfit. Either Jane or Batsy is liable to steal it (Spectra HAS clothes-- Batsy'd definitely steal GG Elissabat's stuff, if that should land in my hands), but I'm gonna paint it. It's all bamboo and hibiscus flowers, so it should be both easy AND fun to paint.
